Plunge
2001
In 2000, Vincent Dance Theatre was awarded £35,000 to run Germinate, a two-year programme of work looking at the interface between dance and digital technology in both the community and professional environment. Year One delivered four exceptional projects for young people (14- 25 year olds across the Yorkshire region), the production of four digital video shorts, the setting up of Vincent Dance Theatre’s web site, the buying of necessary technical hardware and the development of new links with key partners in the region.
Plunge aimed to introduce young people, already interested in sport, to the benefits of dance training, and to encourage their exploration of movement within a creative process. VDT workshopped over five weeks in Sheffield Don Valley Stadium, at schools in Hull and Beverley, at Ponds Forge International Sports Venue Sheffield and in the East Riding of Yorkshire with synchronised swimmers, divers, gymnasts and trampolinists aged 7 – 24 years. Involving 65 young participants, this project culminated in a large-scale performance event at Ponds Forge Diving Pool on 1st December 2001, watched by 400 people. The Plunge video was shown at the Arts Council’s Digital Dance Day at the Riverside Studios, London on 15th December 2001, where Charlotte Vincent was invited to give a presentation on the Germinate programme.
