Movement / Performance Workshops (in education)

Vincent Dance Theatre regularly run dance, theatre, choreography and performance skills based workshops for dance, theatre and performing arts students at GCSE, A-Level and BTEC level. The company also leads specialist workshops at Higher Education for BA and MA level in formal education settings across the UK and abroad.

Workshop information

VDT offers workshops between 2 – 5 hours in length.

VDT’s Movement Workshops focus on introducing the company’s unique approach to creating intelligent movement / performance material, which includes partnering work and the creation of original performance material from clear concepts and set tasks. Participants have the opportunity to experience Vincent’s methodology first hand by working directly with Charlotte Vincent, Sian Williams, and/or VDT Company members.

VDT Movement Workshops stimulate and strengthen students’ creative and performance skills by encouraging individual voices to be heard, facilitating students to find their own voice and unlock the most appropriate language for what they are trying to say. Working with one of VDT’s specialist practitioners in any educational setting, students will acquire new approaches and develop their skills. The workshops promote the physical and conceptual confidence students need to develop their own theatre and dance work.

VDT’s workshops focus on empowering individuals to tell their own stories and make theatre and dance from a physical and text based starting point. In longer residencies there is time for the participants’ own ideas to be developed into fully produced performances.

VDT can work with groups of between 8 and 30 participants in movement workshops. Workshops are pitched to the level and experience of your group. VDT workshops can be held in dance studios, gyms and halls in schools, colleges, universities, dance agencies or venues.

Example workshop structure & content

A release-based warm up flows into partnering skills and structured improvisation, followed by a series of choreographic tasks to find meaning in movement. Whole day workshops dive deeper into VDT’s practice exploring writing and the translation of words and feelings into gesture and simple movement phrases, shared with the group. Facilitators offer supportive critical feedback, encouraging students to return to the work using new skills and understanding to further develop what they have started to explore in the workshop. Short film clips of VDT’s work may be shown to stimulate debate and kickstart creative processes.

Charlotte really opened the student’s eyes in a refreshing and honest way. It was a pleasure to observe and will impact their learning, and the way I will be working with them over the next semester. Josh Slater, Head of Movement, Plymouth University

‘I was able to further develop partner work, and learnt about the need to dance with someone. It’s not just about sharing the stage space, it’s about people.’  Lincoln Performing Arts participant

‘How important the details are of natural responses, and reality when it’s not forced.’ BA Student, Bath Spa University
